Former Houston Texans Wide Receiver Andre Johnson to be Inducted into the Texas Sports HOF WACO, Texas (March 1, 2019)—Seven-time Pro-Bowler Andre Johnson will be inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2019 on March 30 in Waco. Johnson grew up in Miami, Florida. He played at Miami Senior High School, and was named All-American and played as one of the top prospects in the country. He signed with the University of Miami, and was a BCS National Champion in 2001. He completed his collegiate career catching 92 passes for 1,831 yards and had 20 touchdowns, ranking him fifth on Miami’s All-Time list. Johnson was named co-MVP at the 2002 Rose Bowl against Nebraska and led his team to the win. Johnson also competed for the track and field team in college, winning the 60-meter dash at the Big East Indoor Championship and the 100-meter dash at the Big East Outdoor Championship in 2002. Johnson was the third pick in the 2003 NFL draft to the Houston Texans. Throughout his 14-year career, he was a seven-time Pro-Bowler, two-time First Team All Pro, two-time Second Team All Pro, two-time NFL receiving yards leader, and three-time AFC receiving yards leader. He ranks 11th all-time in receptions at 1,062, 10th all time in receiving yards with 14,185 yards and completed 70 touchdowns in his career. He holds the NFL record for the most games with 10 plus receptions in a season and most seasons with 100 plus receptions and 1,400 plus yards. Johnson also holds the Texans’ records for the most career receptions, most receiving yards, most receiving touchdowns, most receptions in a single season, most receiving yards in a single season, most seasons with 100 plus receptions and most starts. He was the first player in NFL history to record seven games with 10 or more receptions in 2008. He played for the Houston Texans until 2014, and then played for the Indianapolis Colts in 2014 and the Tennessee Titans in 2016. Before retiring from the NFL, Johnson signed a one-day contract on April 19, 2017 to officially retire with the Houston Texans, the team he considered home. Johnson was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 2014 and was the first inductee into the Texans’ Ring of Honor in 2017. Johnson will be one of seven inductees honored at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame banquet on March 30. He will be joined by the family of former Tennis legend Maureen Connolly Brinker (deceased), former University of Arkansas legend Loyd Phillips, former professional basketball star Nancy Lieberman, former University of Texas and MLB pitcher Greg Swindell, former Texas A&M and NFL kicker Tony Franklin and former Dallas Cowboys All-Pro Tight End Jason Witten. The class of 2019 Inductees will be honored on Saturday, March 30 at 6 p.m. at the Waco Convention Center.
