The Texas Sports Hall of Fame (TSHOF) has reinitiated the Southwest Conference (SWC) Hall of Honor and renamed it the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame, according to Carroll Dawson, TSHOF President. “We are delighted that the Texas Sports Hall of Fame can honor former Southwest Conference greats, both publicly and within the museum,” said Dawson. “This additional avenue of recognition for one of the great conferences in intercollegiate athletics is consistent with the mission of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame to preserve, protect and provide for the present and long-term security and preservation of Texas sports history.” When the Southwest Conference was disbanded, all the intellectual property rights were legally transferred to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. This included the rights to the Southwest Conference Hall of Honor. Between 1993 and 1995, the SWC Hall of Honor inducted 30 members. The Texas Sports Hall of Fame will now have the opportunity to recognize hundreds more players, coaches and administrators who participated in the conference during its 80 plus years of existence. Dawson says that out of the 314 members in the TSHOF, a total of 167 players and coaches participated in the Southwest Conference. These players will automatically be ‘grandfathered’ into the SWC Hall of Fame. Membership by schools is as follows: Arkansas, 2; Baylor, 20; Houston, 9; Rice, 17; SMU, 23; TCU, 17; Texas, 47; Texas A&M, 24; Texas Tech, 8. Each school will have its own Selection Committee with exclusive responsibility to choose the individuals to be inducted into the SWC Hall of Fame. Eighteen individuals will be inducted in the first year. An induction luncheon will take place in Dallas on October 28, 2013, with nine new members inducted. There will be a second induction event in the Spring of 2014, with the other nine members being inducted. The Southwest Conference Hall of Fame will now be one of four separate halls of fame
housed within the confines of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame’s physical structure. They include the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame, the Texas Tennis Hall of Fame, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and now, the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame. Comments are closed.
