Rosters Set for 2nd Annual Texas Shootout

The Texas ShootOut presented by the Fairfield Inn & Suites and the Hampton Inn North selects 25 to 30 boys and girls considered better than the best in high school basketball to showcase the talent the state holds. 

Brian Winarick, who founded the game along with Travis Minor, Travis Mennitt and Curt Veselka, is excited about the opportunity provided by the showcase. When asked why he began this event, Winarick said “for the love of the game. I remember the last shot in the last second of the last game I ever played. I want these kids to have as much fun as possible and never forget the last game they play in their high school career.”  

The shootout will take place on May 5 in Baylor University’s Ferrell Center and benefits the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. Last year players included Jenzel Nash, who led the nation in scoring. Once the word got out that Jenzel was playing, it was easy to get other players to commit. “The hall of fame carries a lot of recognition,” Winarick said. “It’s pretty cool for them to be a part of such a big name.”

​    Players are selected by reviewing scouting sheets and visiting home town games. After coaches have been contacted and athletes commit to playing in the showcase, the committee divides out the talent and compiles teams. “The idea is to keep the talent level,” Winarick said.

​    When asked what his biggest goal was for this year’s event, Winarick said he wanted the athletes to have fun and to benefit the hall of fame as much as possible.  “I want to make sure 100% of proceeds go to the hall of fame because they have provided such an opportunity for these kids.”
