WACO March 16, 2011— Former Houston Rockets general manager and Baylor men’s basketball coach Carroll Dawson has been named the new President of the Board of Trustees for the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. Dawson is the first inductee of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame to be named president. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003. “I am very honored. This was out of the blue and I was shocked because no inductee has ever become president. I accepted the position right when they offered it. My wife and I knew it was something special.” Dawson said. Dawson was general manager of the Rockets from 1996 to 2007 and was an assistant coach for the Rockets from 1980 to 1996 during their four trips to the NBA Finals. Dawson was also the head coach of the Baylor basketball team from 1973 to 1977. “Anytime you have been the head of something it helps. It’s a little different because I will have to rely on a lot of committees,” Dawson said. “I don’t look at myself as running the Hall of Fame. Everyone works very hard to get the job done there; it’s a lot like coming together to win a ball game.” The Texas Sports Hall of Fame was recently expanded to include a new exhibit about the Southwest Conference. It includes a replica Cotton Bowl field and more than 100 new exhibit cases. “I’m very proud of the Hall of Fame. Being the first inductee to be named president is the best. I’ll do everything I can to make sure people know about it and take care of it,” Dawson said. “All the things we have added to it now makes it a trip well worth it. The museum belongs to everyone in the state. Texas does a great job of honoring its sports heroes and I think everyone should see it.”
