MICHAEL YOUNG
Michael Young is a name everyone across Ranger nation knows. He was born in Covina, California and attended Bishop Amat Memorial High School in La Puente, California. He was recruited to the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he played until he was drafted in the 25th round by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1997.
Young was traded to the Rangers in 2000 and made his MLB debut that September. One of the best all around players in Texas Rangers history, he played shortstop and second and third base. Young was a seven time All-Star from 2004-2009 and again in 2011. He was named the 2006 All-Star Game MVP when he hit a two strike RBI triple off of Trevor Hoffman to give the American League a 3-2 victory over the National League. In 2008 and 2011, he was awarded the Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award. He spent two years leading the American League in hits in 2005 (221) and 2011 (213). Young was named the American League Batting Champion in 2005 and won the Golden Glove Award in 2008. He led the Rangers to their only World Series appearances in franchise history in 2010 and 2011. By the time he left the Rangers in 2012, Young set team records in seven offensive categories including - games played (1,774), hits (2,178), extra base hits (632) doubles (406), triples (55), at bats (7,221), and extra-base hits (632). Young was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in 2013 where he played 126 games. He ended his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2014, and later that year he was hired as a special assistant to general manager Jon Daniels by the Texas Rangers. In 2016, he was inducted into the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
