Odus Mitchell’s entire career was spent as a head football coach. During his 42 years of coaching, he compiled a record of 287 victories, 129 defeats, and 17 ties. He posted a 21-year high school record of 165-44-8 at Slaton, Childress, Pampa, and Marshall. In his 21 seasons at North Texas State (1946-1966), his teams posted a 122-85-9 record, won or shared 10 conference titles, and played in three bowl games. After the 1966 season, Mitchell was named Coach of the Year in the Missouri Valley Conference and Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association in District 7 (Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico). He was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1986.
