Jerry Hopkins was a two-time all-state guard for the Mart Panthers (1957 & 1958). His sophomore season Mart beat Gaston 20-7 to win a 1A Regional Championship. The next season when class A schools were allowed to advance past the regional round Mart won a co-state championship by tying White Oak 7-7. That season the Panthers had a 14-0-1 record and outscored their opponents 505-129. In 1958 the Panthers advanced to the state quarter-finals but lost to Elgin 16-8. Hopkins was a member of the Waco Tribune Herald’s 1958 Cen-Tex Super Squad and was selected to play in the 1959 THSCA All-Star Game. Hopkins earned three letters at Texas A&M from 1960-1962. Hopkins was the center on the All-SWC team in 1961 and 1962. Hopkins played linebacker in the NFL with the Denver Broncos (1963-1966), Miami Dolphins (1967) and Oakland Raiders (1968).
