Swink, Jim

Uniform Number 23

Bio:
Jim Swink was one of the greatest ball carriers in the history of Southwest Conference football. As a junior at TCU in 1955 he was a consensus All-American when he led the nation in scoring (125 points) and was second in rushing yards (1,283). After Swink led TCU to the 1956 and 1957 Cotton Bowls his coach Abe Martin described him as “…a little ol’ rubber-legged outfit nobody can tackle.” The two-time Academic All-American turned down the NFL and enrolled at Southwest Medical Center in Dallas. Swink, who later became an orthopedic surgeon in Fort Worth once said, “I’d rather be a good family doctor than the greatest football player in the world.” Swink was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1977.
