Calories Count!

According to pediatrics.com 15% of children in the U.S. are overweight and another 15% are at risk of becoming overweight. This educational tour will cover the following topics-

• What are calories and how do we burn them?
• How to read nutritional information on food packages
• How to calculate proper portions and serving sizes
• Fun activities for burning calories

Please contact Jay Black (jay.black@tshof.org) or 254-756-1633 to schedule your tour
This program take 1.5 hours per group
Cost is $5.00 per student.
Group Size - minimum 15 / maximum 30
LEVEL - 4th & 5th Grade

Health Education Principles that will be used in conjunction with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
5th grade TEKS
(1)  Health Information. The student knows ways to enhance and maintain personal health throughout the life span.  The student is expected to:
(A)  examine and analyze food labels and menus for nutritional content
(B)  apply information from the food guide pyramid to making healthy choices
(D) calculate the relationship between caloric intake and energy expenditure

LEVEL - Fifth Grade GT Students and Up

GOAL - To teach students to use mathematical formulas to calculate the following baseball statistics - Batting Average, Total Bases & Slugging Percentage

Mathmatical Principles that will be used in conjunction with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Fifth Grade -

(5.1) Number, operation and quantitative reasoning. The student uses place value to represent whole numbers and decimals. See calculation of Batting Average and Slugging Percentage.

(5.3) Number, operation and quantitative reasoning. The student adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides to solve meaningful problems. See calculation of Batting Average, Total Bases & Slugging Percentage

(5.4) Number, operation, and quantitative reasoning. The student estimates to determine reasonable results. The student is expected to use strategies, including rounding and compatible numbers to estimate solutions to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems. See calculation (rounding) of Batting Average & Slugging Percentage.

(5.5) Patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking. The student make generalizations based on observed patterns and relationships. The student is expected to: (A) describe the relationship between sets of data in graphic organizers such as lists, tables, charts, and diagrams. See calculation of a player’s Total Bases using the chart on the back of a baseball card.

(5.6) Patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking. The student describes relationships mathematically. The student is expected to select from and use diagrams and equations such as y=5+3 to represent meaningful problem solutions. See calculation of formula for Total Bases.

• Division
• Subtraction
• Rounding of Decimal Points
• Basic Algebra (solving for variables)
• Analysis

Eventually different Major League Math programs will be developed for different grade levels

Mean, Median, Mode and Range with the
Visual Sports Simulator

VSSbaseball.jpg

After a brief presentation on Mean, Median, Mode and Range students will be divided into teams and allowed to pitch a baseball or softball using our new state of the art Visual Sports Simulator. The VSS has a radar gun that displays how fast each pitch is thrown. Students record their mph for each pitch then calculate the Mean, Median, Mode and Range. The team with the highest mean receives a prize!

LEVEL - 3rd Grade and Up

Mathmatical Principles that will be used in conjunction with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills

6th grade TEKS
(10)  Probability and statistics. The student uses statistical representations to analyze data. The student is expected to:
     (B)  identify mean (using concrete objects and pictorial models), median, mode, and range of a set of data;

(D) solve problems by collecting, organizing, displaying, and interpreting data

2) Number, operation, and quantitative reasoning. The student adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides to solve problems and justify solutions. The student is expected to:

C) use multiplication and division of whole numbers to solve problems including situations involving equivalent ratios and rates;

5th grade TEKS
3) Number, operation, and quantitative reasoning. The student adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides to solve meaningful problems. The student is expected to

(A)  use addition and subtraction to solve problems involving whole numbers and decimals;
(C)  use division to solve problems involving whole numbers (no more than two-digit divisors and three-digit dividends without technology), including interpreting the remainder within a given context;
(13)  Probability and statistics. The student solves problems by collecting, organizing, displaying, and interpreting sets of data. The student is expected to:
(B)  describe characteristics of data presented in tables and graphs including median, mode, and range; and
(14)  Underlying processes and mathematical tools. The student applies Grade 5 mathematics to solve problems connected to everyday experiences and activities in and outside of school. The student is expected to:
(A)  identify the mathematics in everyday situations;
(D)  use tools such as real objects, manipulatives, and technology to solve problems.
