Education

At the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, learning leaps off the exhibit walls and into the classroom through dynamic, hands-on programs designed to engage students of all ages. We believe that celebrating the legends of Texas sports and promoting healthy living go hand-in-hand, which is why the educational experience at the Hall has two strong gears: one that tells the story of Texas athletics and another that brings in active, standards-based learning tied to fitness, health, and math skills.

Active Learning Meets Texas Sports

Within our Stephen & Mary Birch Health, Fitness & Education Center, students step into a space where physical activity, nutrition awareness and sports sciences are the curriculum. The Center offers interactive exhibits and simulations — including a virtual sports simulator and radar gun-based activities — all designed to make learning fun and relevant. Whether students are calculating slugging percentages or tracking pitch speeds, they’re engaging with real-world math and health concepts through the lens of athletics.

Programs Aligned to Classroom Needs

We’ve structured our offerings so that every school group finds a fit. “Major League Math” is designed for 4th- through 8th-grade students: by using baseball statistics (batting average, total bases, slugging percentage), students get hands-on experience with mean, median, mode and range while standing in a gallery full of sports memories. For older students, we offer “Mean, Median, Mode & Range” (4th & 5th through high school) — here, students record their pitch speeds in our simulator, then calculate averages and ranges in teams. Both lessons are built to align with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards, making them an excellent choice for teachers who want to tie museum field trips directly to classroom goals.

Major League Math

LEVEL – 4th Grade thru 8th
$6 dollars per student; teachers free

Group Size – minimum 20 / maximum 60
Each student will receive one pack of baseball cards
This program makes use of math calculations to figure mean, median to calculate the following baseball statistics – Batting Average, Total Bases & Slugging Percentage
Major League Math takes 1 hour per group – 30 minutes of extra time may be required for quick tour & gift shop

Mean, Median, Mode and Range

LEVEL – 4th & 5th Grade thru High School
$5 dollars per student; teachers free
Group Size – minimum 15 / maximum 40
In this lesson, the students will be educated on calculating mean, median, mode and range. After, students will be divided into teams and allowed to pitch a baseball or softball using our new state of the art Visual Sports Simulator. The VSS has a radar gun that displays how fast each pitch is thrown. Students record their mph for each pitch then calculate the Mean, Median, Mode and Range. The team with the highest mean receives a prize!
This program takes 2 hours per group

What Does a Field Trip Look Like?

Groups begin in our gallery space, surrounded by artifacts that honor Texas sports legends — the moment helps connect students to the state’s athletic heritage. Then, they transition into the interactive Center, where they participate in either the math-oriented challenge or the health/fitness session. Each student receives a pack of baseball cards (in select programs) and leaves not just with facts, but personal experiences linked to math, movement and history. Teachers attend for free, and group sizes are flexible — minimum 20 students for some programs, up to 60 for others.

Why Bring Your Class Here?

By choosing the Texas Sports Hall of Fame for your next field trip, you’re offering students a rare combination: meaningful sports history, engaging curriculum, and active learning that moves the body as well as the mind. Many students may already know the names of inductees from our museum galleries — but here, they become part of the story: pitching for stats, measuring results, comparing team performance, and building a deeper connection to Texas sports culture.

We look forward to welcoming your class, your team, or your youth group — and helping you turn a visit into a memorable learning experience that supports fitness, academic goals and an appreciation for the legends who helped shape sports in Texas.
